Recovering Creativity
Return to What Moves You
Introduction
There is a movement that happens when we stop trying to force the new. A deliberate shift from the familiar shore of what you already know to the open water of what is waiting to emerge. We don’t abandon skill or discipline but allow the mind to settle, the body to relax, and the attention to soften, so that what has been obscured by effort can rise to the surface.
Creativity and Pressure
Creativity does not really respond well to pressure, contrary to myth. It doesn’t thrive in cluttered spaces or overworked systems. It appears when there is room to breathe, to wander, to notice what is already present but unseen. The challenge is not to generate more ideas, but to create the conditions where the right ones can find us.
This is not a solo act. Even when the work feels solitary, it is shaped by everything around us. The conversations we’ve had, the spaces we’ve moved through, the quiet moments of reflection. Creativity lives in the dance between us and the world. It is relational, collective, and alive. The work is not about control, but listening.
What to Do
When the mind feels crowded:
Begin by naming what is taking up space. Not to judge it, but to acknowledge it. Then set it aside, just for now. The cup can be empty for a while..
When the body feels restless:
Move without an agenda. Walk, stretch, breathe. Let the rhythm of the body guide us back to stillness. Creativity often returns when the nervous system feels safe.
When the next step feels unclear:
Start with one small thing that feels true. just the first mark, the first word, the first gesture. The rest will follow when it is ready.

The Mental Tools for Neurodivergents (MTND) mini course is a free email series designed to help you deal with “normal” when it’s not designed for your brain.
Initially written for neurodivergent people, but helpful for anyone stressed by navigating neurotypical systems, it’s not a reset like one of our Guided Relaxations or Moments.
It’s a set of precise, field-tested strategies for coping with overload, executive function challenges, sensory strain, and expectations that don’t match how you work best.
You’ll get one short email a day for 5 days. Then, if it’s helpful, you can go deeper.
